Best food to reduce bloating
Most of us are aware of feeling bloated – either after a meal or early in the morning. But there are some of us for whom feeling bloated is a regular affair. It feels rather puffy and the stomach feels stretched and uncomfortable.
If your stomach feels bloated, it could be because of any of the following:
- Coeliac disease
- Food intolerance
- Irritable bowel syndrome
Whatever the reason, there are some foods which can help with the bloating.
1. Yoghurt – Natural yoghurt has a pro-biotic bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus. This bacteria lives in our GI tract and helps in supporting a healthy digestive process and calms inflammation. Two portions of low-fat yoghurt in a day can ease you from bloating
2. Bananas – Bananas contain potassium which aids in maintaining the electrolyte balance in our body. Bloating is often a result of consuming food with lots of water. The potassium in the banana helps flush out the excess sodium and water from the body.
3. Ginger – Ginger is one of the most ancient herbal remedies for bloating and gas. Its anti-inflammatory properties help the body breakdown proteins. Ginger has also proven to have a relaxing effect on your intestines, thus reducing the inflammation in your colon and helping the food to pass more easily from your body.
4. Lemons – the age-old principle of drinking a glass of warm water with juice of a lemon is actually a great practice to keep you off bloating and acidity for life. The acids in the lemon help your GI tract move things faster.
5. Coconut Water – Coconut water is packed with electrolytes such as potassium, chloride and calcium. Hence it is a great way to flush out sodium from our bodies. Unless you have a medical condition keeping you from it, 1 glass of coconut water every day can help you with bloating.
It is quite the irony that most of our diseases arise from food, and the remedies to these also lie in our very own kitchen.
